This historically Polish neighbourhood has seen a lot of changes over the last few years. The famous strip was dotted with Polish bakeries restaurants and cafes, this flavour remains intact side by side with new green grocers restaurants and shops. This area combines new and old effortlessly. Heavy construction in the area from 2009-2011 caused some businesses to close as the street was almost impassable. The end result was indeed worth the wait with wider sidewalks, new streetcar tracks and new trees. This is a close knit community with fantastic schools and amenities steps away. The Polish population is now becoming outnumbered by the influx of young families and artists. The area has many fantastic parks and a lovely fenced in dog parks (Sorauren Park and High Park a short walk away). Don’t miss out on the Farmers Market every Monday from 3-7pm in Sorauren Park.

Four high schools that serve Roncesvalles are Humberside, Parkdale, West Park, and Western Tech high schools. West Park, however, was closed and currently being leased to the TCDSB as Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton.

Sorauren Lofts

This building which was once a ball bearing factory has been converted to a 48 unit mixed conversion. The majority of the building is a conversion from the original with two new additions. Features include 15 foot ceilings, with large timber beams and columns, beautiful 6 foot windows and open web steel joists and metal ceilings in some units.

Baseball Glove Factory Lofts 1 Columbus

This building is located just off of Sorauren ave on Columbus. This building was formerly the Rawlings Baseball Glove Factory. With the help of Jackson Goad Architects it was finished in 1996. This is a small boutique loft building with only 10 units in the building and no amenities. The size of units in this building range from 1300 sqft to over 2400 sqft. Some of the larger units have direct elevator access into their units and rooftop terraces with fantastic views. The units have 10 foot ceilings with industrial steel and wood beams, exposed brick and polished concrete floors. Units do not often come on the market in this building and when they do they move fast!

Macdonell Lofts

This is a very small warehouse conversion containing only 6 units! This was one of the earliest conversions in the area, which was completed around 1986. Again units in this building rarely come available. Some of the units do have access to their own rooftop terraces.

Feather Factory Lofts

Located on Dundas West just north of Roncesvalles and Parkdale, this building is ideally located close to Dundas West Subway station and has the Dundas streetcar outside its door. This building is located just north of queen street west near Dufferin. This is another hard loft conversion with all of the fixins, Wood beams and post, exposed brick and hardwood floors. This was originally an industrial offices building and was converted in 1989 to live/work spaces. Ceiling heights range from 10-12 1/2 feet. There are no amenities in this building and parking goes on a first come first serve basis as the building has 27 common element parking spaces. Size of units range from 500sqft to about 1100sqft.

Parkdale

One of the most eclectic melting pots in the city of Toronto, Parkdale is home to artists, young families, and everything in between. The types of housing is very diverse in the area, with beautiful old victorian homes, lofts, row houses and even some little cottages (Trenton Terrace off of Cowan ave). Parkdale was one of the most coveted areas before the gardiner expressway cut the comunity off from the lake. The neighbourhood fell into disrepair and many rooming houses were created. In the last 10 years the whole neighbourhood has been undergoing a large revitalization and gentrification. Some of the city's best shops and restaurants call this area home. I have been living and working in Parkdale for the last 7 years and love the area dearly!

Schools

Holy Family Catholic School

Holy Family is a Catholic elementary school, a part of Holy Family Parish located on Close Avenue. Founded in 1900, two years before the parish church and present school opened at their current location, Holy Family School was created out of Toronto's original west end parish and school of St. Helen's and was first located in Parkdale's Masonic Hall on the south side of Queen Street near Dowling Ave. The school was served for many years by the Sisters of Loreto who commuted from their convent in Toronto's downtown. As population increased in the Parkdale area, the school was enlarged many times such that the standing remains of the original building are now obscured. In the 1980s a community centre opened in the school building, also at that time, Toronto's archbishop invited fathers of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri in Montreal to come to Toronto to serve Holy Family Church and school. When the original Holy Family Church burned in 1997, the congregation worshipped in the school while funds were raised to build a new church.

Parkdale Collegiate Institute

Parkdale Collegiate Institute is a public high school located on Jameson Avenue south of Queen Street. It was founded in the 1880s.

Queen Victoria Public School

Queen Victoria is a public elementary school located on Close Avenue at King Street.

Parkdale Public School

Parkdale P.S is an elementary school which includes preschool to grade 8. It is located on Seaforth avenue.
